I first became acquainted with this temple when riding through the foothills to Nainital,
a former British hill station in northern India.The temple which is perched on the
huge rock which stands defiantly on the flood plain of the river Kosi, is visited
by thousands of devotees to the Goddess Naina Devi. A large fair is held on the plain
during Poorinima.I have made several visits to this stunning location which is on
the edge of Corbett National Park and came to the conclusion a large painting was
needed to recreate the physical sensation of being there. On the left of the picture
pilgrims are crossing the hurdle and stone bridge while to the right local women
are returning from the forest with faggots and fodder. The mellow, hazy, evening
light was central to this picture, accentuating the magnificence of this holy edifice.
