Acer Palmatum
Endsleigh, Milton Abbot, Devon
Sold Oil painting by David William Young.
This magnificent old Acer can be found on the former Duke of Bedford estate at Endsleigh
in the Tamar valley near the Devon village of Milton Abbot. Endsleigh was the Devon
retreat of a succession of Bedford's and the house (or cottage) was built in the
‘rustic’ style that was fashionable at the time among the big landowners. The grounds
where laid out in a similar natural rustic fashion with lots of sunken paths, water
features and follies beneath a canopy of new and exotic species trees and shrubs
that were being discovered and returned to England by adventurous plant collectors.
These have now matured over the last century and a half and one very fine example
of these plants is this tremendous Acer that is huge and when in its autumn glory
shrouds the visitor walking beneath in glow of red light
